Beauty Hacks for Beginners!

You don't have to be a professional makeup artist to pull off some of the most popular beauty looks. Even though natural is the vibe these days, sometimes you just want to show up and stand out with a bold look. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, there's something so fun about playing with your makeup! It can take a bit of practice to get it right, but I find that if you take care not to apply too much at once, you'll be able to experiment in a way that still lets you keep things in check. So here are some tips for getting started with some more advanced beauty looks:

1. Use a flat-top brush to apply foundation.

Before you put any foundation on your face, make sure to clean your brush. Using a light hand, apply foundation in a circular motion starting from the center of your face (or wherever you want to focus). Be sure to blend carefully into all areas so that it looks natural and not too heavy. For a more natural finish, use a sponge instead of the brush for application. It will give an airbrushed look! If you want the most flawless result possible, apply foundation with a flat-top brush for extra coverage and smoothness.

2. Hide dark circles with lighter concealer and add contour with darker concealer.

If you have dark under-eye circles, use a lighter shade of concealer to cover them. If you want to add contour, use a darker shade of concealer and apply it where you want your face to appear thinner. Don’t go overboard here or else you’ll end up looking like an Oompa Loompa.

3.Use a small, tapered eyeshadow brush to apply concealer in the inner corner of your eye to brighten it.

This technique works best with a creamier concealer that isn't too dry or cakey. Begin by dabbing on a bit of concealer at the base of your lash line, then blend outwards like you would with foundation. Next, take your small brush and use it to tap a tiny amount of concealer on top of the area where light would hit if you were looking straight ahead (the inner corner). Use this same method for other areas like under-eye circles and blemishes as well!

3. Make your under eyes sparkle by applying some glittery highlighter.

Apply highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes and the center of your lower lash line with a small, tapered eyeshadow brush. Apply a light layer of highlighter, starting from the midpoint on both sides and moving outward in an arching motion toward the outer corners of each eye until you reach the innermost corner. For added drama, apply highlighter along the upper lash line as well! Use a shimmery shade that matches your skin tone (fair = pink; medium = peach; dark = bronze). If you want something even more intense than that, try applying glittery highlighters instead!

4. Add freckles with an angled eyeliner brush and eyeliner.

Use a light hand. Pick a brown eyeliner pencil (or black) with more of a matte finish. Apply the eyeliner with an angled brush, using small strokes and gentle pressure to create freckles. Don’t press too hard or you will get visible lines instead of freckles! Make your cheekbones pop by making an upside-down triangle of bronzer on each side of your face and coloring in the rest of the space with highlighter.

To make your cheekbones look more defined and prominent, you'll want to apply bronzer first. Here's how:

  • Use an angled brush and blend the bronzer on top of your cheekbones in an upside-down triangle shape. Make sure to start at the hollows of your cheeks and go up toward each ear.

  • Then add highlighter with a fluffy brush on top of the areas that you've already applied the bronzer to (like I did in my video). Apply it so there's no space between where one color ends and another begins. If it helps, use a ruler or tape measure as a guide for placement—just make sure not to touch anything with too much pressure!

5, Lip Shaping

For full lips, first use nude lip liner to slightly overline them, then add gloss or lipstick that's just a bit lighter than your natural lip color.

First, use nude lip liner to slightly overline your lips. If you already have full lips, skip this step and move on to the next one.

Then apply gloss or lipstick that's just a bit lighter than your natural lip color. Using a lip brush will give you more control over where it goes than using a wand applicator or your finger would.

Finally, use a lip liner pencil to fill in the entire lip—this will help prevent feathering (when product bleeds outside of its intended area).

For thin lips, add a light shimmery gloss or add color in the center of your lips only. This will make them look fuller.

There are a few ways to make your lips look fuller. One of the most effective is to use a lip liner that’s a few shades darker than your natural lip color and trace your lips with it. Then add a light shimmery gloss or lipstick in the center of your lips only, which will help draw attention there and make them look plumper. You can also try applying some concealer under your bottom lip (without overdoing it) if you want an even more dramatic effect right away!

6. For a longer-looking nose, make sure to blend your contour lines really well to accentuate the bridge of your nose.

The first step is to find a foundation that matches your skin tone. For this, I recommend going to Sephora and getting matched by a professional (for free). This way, you're sure to get an accurate match for your skin color. Once you have found a shade that works for you, apply it all over your face with either a makeup sponge or clean fingers. It’s best if the product is seen as second-skin; it shouldn't look like it's clogging up any pores or lines in the skin because then it won't be able to do its job properly!

Once you've got the right shade of foundation on hand, use a brush or sponge (whatever works best for you) and apply thin layers all over until every surface of your face has been covered with enough product so there aren't any visible patches left behind."

7. To cover acne, use green primer on red spots and regular foundation on the rest of your face.

Then apply a little more green primer on any spots that are still showing through after you've applied regular foundation all over your face.

Green primer will neutralize redness, making it easier to cover up with other makeup. The green color has its own special properties as well: it can help even out skin tone while also evening out texture and creating a smooth surface for makeup application.

If you still see redness peeking through after applying regular foundation all over your face, try applying more green primer before applying the second coat of regular foundation (and again, if there's still some redness showing through).
